Evaluation Question 4
How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning, and evaluation stages?
I used a range of media technologies in my research, planning and evaluation stages to help me further my knowledge of the media industry and develop my skills as a media producer. This included researching new ways of presenting work and showing how I developed my ideas and understandings of existing media text.
Blogger was the main form of presentation I knew how to use to show my work. This was a simple way of presenting my work however as it was just one page of white It was quite limiting on the visual aspect. Because of this I decided to branch out and look for new ways of presenting my work. This is when I found Prezzie and Info-graphic which are design websites that allow the user to create visual power points and posters. This allowed me to show my work in different mediums and also develop skills in a new area of media technology.
To research I used youtube to view video's on how to improve my filming and editing skills, this was very helpful as it allowed me to clearly see a step by step tutorial of what I needed to do when I came across a problem. For example when the shots I had filmed were too dark a youtube video showed me how to change the hue and saturation to brighten them up and show more colour. This allowed me to improve the quality of my video as well as improve my own skills. I also used YouTube to research exisiting media texts for ideas and influences for my own work. These examples are what gave me shot ideas as well as give me ideas for how to pace and time my video.
This project was also an opportunity for me to use Final Cut Express and edit a video for the first time. This media technology is quite advanced and allows people to create videos for various reasons. The program was alien to me at the beggining as I had no idea how to use it however after research and peer assistance I developed my skills to learn how to operate this new program and used it to edit my entire video. This is a new skill I was happy to develop as now I also know how to use the program to a proffesional standard without throwing the screen out a window when rendering for over 40 minutes. I also learned that saving your work throughout was an important part of the completion of my media production.
The equipment I used to film my video was possibly the most important part of my project as I needed to know how to shoot clear and intresting shots that were appropriote for the type of video I was trying to create but also met the criteria for my project. The camera I used was a DSLR Nikon Camera with two different lenses I used to shoot various types of shots. These lenses allowed me to film shots where everything was in focus and also to film shots where the background was blurred and the foreground was in focus, and visa versa.

Evaluation Question 3
What have you learned from your audiunce feedback?
My audiunce feedback was a very important part of my media production because I wanted to make sure I created products that people connected well with and found visually interesting. I also wanted to appeal to a specific demographic so that I could focus on making every specific part cater to their needs.
I looked at White's gatekeeper theory who who theorised that as a media producer we all have a responsibility when creating a media product as we can decide what we present to the audience and in what way, we are the gatekeepers. For example if I had represented a young person as a criminal, I would've been reinforcing a negative sterotype, and would be using my platform as a gatekeeper in an offensive way. However this theory applies more to large scale producers, such as Warner Bros. Because I do not have the power or influence to change how anyone would view a certain group. Despite this I still found it nessasary to keep making sure my audiunce had a say in what I was producing so not to create a product people were offended or did not respond well too. From my audiunce feedback I learned/changed various things about my product.
The typography and style of my product was massively influenced by my target audience. I handed out many surveys for a group of 8-10 people would sign and the most popular would be the design used. I tried to not let my own bias be too much of a factor on the decisions as in a real media production it would be a comitee listening to the needs of an audience and not a single person choosing the designs. This worked out well for me as everyone seemed to have a similar idea of what they thought best for my style, the chosen font for my house style was "Chalkduster" as they believed in matched the homemade and lighthearted genre I was aiming for. They also chose which style was best out of a range of prototypes for my digipak pages, the styles they picked were the ones I did end up using for my project and I was happy with the outcome.
Another thing I learned while receiving my audience feedback was how important it was to listen to critisism. After I had competed a version of my digipak, video and advertisement I showed them to my target audiunce and asked for feedback on what I could do to improve my work, much to my dissapointment, no one said it was perfect and I did have to change alot of the design and style. For example I realised through this that I had a large range of fonts that did not meet any particular house style, and so after revising I made sure the entire project had one very clear theme throughout. I also learned new ways of creating my digipak through a peer who showed me new methods of editing through photoshop. This, I believe, was very important In the development of my media product as not only did it help me develop my work to meet my target jaundices expectations but also because I learned new methods and skills through listening to feedback.
There was multiple types of feedback I wanted throughout my project so I could gather a wide variety of support and critisims from different groups. I believed if I could have feedback from multiple peer groups they would be able to view my work from better angles and I'd have a more thorough idea of what I was doing right/wrong. For example, I asked my teacher for help throughout my project as my teacher is expirenced in the field of Media and would be able to give me critical analysis of my work and point out why certain aspects work or don't work in terms of creating a proffesional production. She made me re-consider certain ideas and shot types I was using and made sure I kept on track with meeting the criteria set by the exam board. Feedback from my target audience was important for obvious reasons as they were who I was trying to cater too. However I also got the feedback from some people who don't know my project so I could get unbiased opinion on my work. From this I found out that I needed to change the hue and brightness as my video was looking very dark which wasn't my intention.

Evaluation Question 1
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
The aim of my media production for my A Level portfolio was to create a conventional music video with 2 ancillary products which all followed a similar theme and style and met the criteria for my project.
The song I chose for my video was "On top of the world" by Imagine Dragons. The reason I chose this song was that there is a wide range of indie rock/pop songs in the music industry which means I had my pick of style models which I could use as inspiration for my own video. The existing music video that influenced my work was the video for "Chevy Thunder" by Spector. The reason for this was because it was a fast paced music video and quite conventional in style but also because it had interesting shots that I felt could be re-created in my own project.
When looking into whether to challenge any media conventions in my project, I researched Torodov's narrative theory. This theory stated that every/most films start with a state of equilibrium, which then gets disrupted at some point in the movie and they must return to a state of equilibrium. He stated this was the most conventional structure for films. Though I am not creating a film, the theory can still apply to a music video however, as it can still have a conventional narrative structure. I considered applying this theory to my work, however, because of the upbeat tempo and theme of my song, I didn't think having a disruption would suit my video, because of this, I developed the theory and challenged the conventional narrative structure by having the whole video as an equilibrium so to speak.
The weather of the video was quite unconventional for such a happy song, in a typical video the weather would reflect the mood of the song, so the conventional style and weather of my song should be sunny and blue skies. My video however was shot with grey skies and clouds. The reason for this was because I did not have acsess to blue skies, as I live in England. However making a dark and cloudy video somehow happy and lighthearted was not only challenging conventions but also something to overcome, which I did so by changing the contrast and hue of the clips to make everything seem brighter.
Another way I challenged media conventions was my choice of actors/actresses. I knew that I wanted my video to be about love, so instead of having a conventional heterosexual relationship, I decided to have a lesbian couple play the couple. The reason for this was because I wanted to challenge the idea of standard couples in music videos, the topic of homosexuality is sensitive in the media, as there is a big debate on how offence stereotypes are. Because of this, I did not use any lesbian stereotypes, such as making them butch or manly in any form, I wanted to focus on representing them as a couple in love, and not an offence cliche. I considered including alcohol and cigarettes in my video, however I did not want to cause a moral panic or make the couple seem like folk devils, as described by Cohen. However this worry of how I represented a lesbian couple was not a major issue in my production, for the simple reason of, though I am the gatekeeper of my work, I do not have the power or status to influence how anyone views lesbians. This is more of an issue for large conglomerates such as Warner Bros as they have alot more power and influence.

Progress Report
To make sure we were on track with our blogs, we filled in a progress report to make sure we could organise which parts of our project needed to be improved. This helped me visualise the pro's and cons of my project.
ACORN Infographic
While researching who my Target Audience would be, I looked at ACORN Demographics, a website which specialise in targeting specific demographics based on postcode, age, gender, income and hobbies. The information given is easily transferable and is what I used when deciding my Target Audience.
Acorn Infographic: http://acorn.caci.co.uk/downloads/Acorn-Infographic.pdf
Acorn Infographic: http://acorn.caci.co.uk/downloads/Acorn-Infographic.pdf
Target Demographic
My target audience for this project is 12-25 year old and both males and females. I have decided this after researching Acorn Demographic's and how they use strategist statistics to calculate which age groups and what type of demographics respond best to different products. I went onto there age website and gathered a few pieces of information which would help me find out who my audience should be.
Using Acorn information from there websites and existing knowledge of the media industry. My key demographic would be 12-25 year olds who are of comfortable prosperity's as they are the most likely to be using computers and technology and so would have more chance to acsess my product. Up to 22% of people use the Internet 20+ hours a day. This means they are very likely to view my product if marketed correctly.
Colour Swatches
To check that the colour scheme I chose would be suitable for my target audience, I created different swatches on a word document and then handed them out to a few peers to recieve feedback. This will helpfully give me a better idea of what colours people would prefer. Even though that I have created this it does not necessarily mean I will keep the colour scheme they pick, as it may not suit the overall theme, I am using this as a starting point for where I should begin. I will hand these swatches out and get people to tick which one they believe to be the best choice for the advertisements and digipak.
Rotoscope Example
I decided to add animations to my video to make it appear much more happy. I came to the decision after the first few days of shooting when I realised that grey skies were going to be the main whether throughout my video. To counteract this I had the idea of using animations and colour corrector through photoshop to make my shots seem much brighter. These are two examples of shots that have been changed through basic colour correction and Photoshop.
Rotoscoping : Tutorial
An idea I had for my media video was creating animations through Photoshop which I can then include in my video. The reason for this was that I wanted something that would change the drab grey sky and surroundings of my video to make it look intentional and more playful. The animations would ideally look happy and "cartoonish" which would help the overall feel of my video.
To achieve this I had to research through online videos. I found out the thing I was trying to achieve is called "Rotoscoping" and through this video I found out how to rotoscope my animations onto Photoshop.

Shooting Plan: Day 3
Day 3 of my shooting will consist of filming Megan strutt getting out of her car at her friends house, then walking to the door, going inside and then talking inside the house. I will then need to shoot Megan and her friend getting into the car and then driving off, and shots of themselves in the car.
Friday, 20 January 2017
Shooting Plan: Day 2
Today I will be filming a few shots of sunsets and driving at night which I will then speed up and play it at different parts of my video. These shots are supposed to show a change and transition of scenes as well as the passing of time. However I might take some shots of Megan driving if I get the time or the opportunity. Unfortunately because I am wanting to shoot a sunset I can't film much in the daytime before I film the sunset. Hopefully the footage I take will be at a quality to use on my video.
Setting and Location
Where I film my video is an important part of my video, it gives a sense of who the characters are and where they come from. I considered multiple places for my video however I felt it best to keep the houses and streets of where my actors actually live. The hopes of doing this is that they not only know where they are going/filming, but they also feel more comfortable and I will be able to get a better audience out of them.
Because of where I live and the time of year we are filming in, I can only film council house/ run down area in the winter. This contrasts with the happiness of the song which is an issue. However I feel like the area I film could make the statement of how we are happy where we choose to be and we dont need a rich area to project a happy lifestyle.
Thurcroft is the home of Megan Strutt and so that's where my video begins. It starts with landscape shots of nearby fields to give a sense of who she is and where she's from. It's fortunate that her house is far away because I can timelapse the car journey and speed it up which is a shot I am wanting at some point In my video. For Megan Tweed's house I am using a friend Briony Canning's house as Tweeds house is on a busy main road and you can't see the door from the road. Briony's house however is not on a main road and I can get a good range of shots and angles of Tweed as she exits this house.
Liam has agreed to let me film him getting ready in his house, this is a shot I need to give a wider depth of characters other than Megan and Tweed. His house is close to both Megan's and Charlie's, this means it is an easy shoot location.

Filming Plan
I am wanting to keep my filming organized and planned out in a way that I can structure when I need each individual person, this will give me the most chance of choosing days people will be available on. I will start by filming Megan Strutt coming out of her house, entering the car and then driving off. I will then time-lapse the footage of her driving and speed it up to make it appear like she has travelled a long distance. This is "Day 1" of my filming.
Day 2 will hopefully be of Megan Strutt turning up at "Megan Tweeds house" and waiting for her to come out. Then the camera will show Tweed coming out of the house and getting in her car. I will be sat in the back filming the two of them in the drivers/passenger seat. I would also like to shoot something at sunset to capture a change of sky using a time-lapse.
Day 3 will most probably be re-shooting any scenes that turned out blurry or not to a high standard. I'm not planning on any new shots for this day.
Day 4 will hopefully be a film of a party scene. The climax to my video is everyone having fun and dancing at a party. This is what the video will be about, 4 friends (or mainly 2) getting ready for a party and having a good time.
Day 5 will be going and getting the landscape, far shots that I will be including throughout my video, especially at the beginning and end. This means I will have to go to various locations to capture these. These include Sheffield, Rotherham, Worksop, and possibly Lincoln.
Day 6 is going to be Charlie, Megan, Liam, and Charlie getting ready in there bedrooms. This will hopefully be simple enough to film as I just need to film them one on one. I am filming this last and not In sequence as I feel like it's simple enough to get each person one on one.

Shooting 1: Raw footage
The first set of filming I did was of Megan Strutt leaving her house, entering the car and then driving off. The shooting went well however because of the weather I didn't get the atmosphere I wanted. This means I will have manipulate the hue and saturation of my footage to get a brighter feel to my video. Also, because my camera ran out of battery while filming, I couldn't complete all the shots I wanted too, however because some of the shots are blurry and not to a very high standard, I will be going back to Megan's house anyway to re-shoot some of my video, and that's when I will shoot my missing scenes.
Raw Footage taken from the camera.

Shooting Plan: Day 1
For the first day of my filming a few shots for my music video I did a few things in preparation for the day. The first day of shooting I chose is Sunday the 8th of January. I'm not shooting a lot of scenes for my music video but enough to begin editing a few scenes.
The scenes I have chosen to shoot are a few of Megan Strutt and Megan Tweed in the car with a green screen over the windows. This means I can begin editing this to look like they are driving the car. I can also have a few shots of the two of them holding hands, getting into the car, and picking one of them up.
In preparation for the filming, I have made sure that they are both free on the day, as well as booking out all the equipment I need for this weekend. I have also checked the weather forecast to make sure the weather is the type that I want it to be.

Actor Choice
For my music video I have decided to use the following actors.
Mitchell Oliver
Megan Tweed
Megan Strutt
Charlie Yates
I have chosen these actors for various reasons. Mitchell Oliver and Charlie Yates are both experienced with camera equipment and are free most Sundays and weekdays which means it is easy to organise days to shoot. Megan Tweed and Megan Strutt were chosen for this reason. Mitchell and Charlie are not going to be key characters throughout my video they are going to be friends who may not even be used as needed characters at all.

Research into Narrative
I have decided to have a non-set narrative in my music video. However even tho there wont be a set beginning middle and end it will still contain elements of a conventional narrative structure. This is a choice I have made through research into existing media products and coming to the decision that a music video made up of different clips with no real correlation would suit the song I have chosen. However I would still like a staggered story-line within which depicts 4 main character having fun together who will serve as the anchor points for my video so that the audience has characters to connect with.
I looked into Vladimir Propp's narrative theory while researching what kind of story I wanted to tell within my video. Propp's theory stated that regardless of the context a set narrative always follows certain rules and most importantly, set characters. These characters are ones such as "The Hero" "The Villain" "The Helper" etc. This is a theory which, in my opinion, seems to apply more to a Shakespearean tragedy then any given narrative however the bases of the theory is that there are set characters who fulfil specific roles. In my video the characters I include won't be explored enough as they won't have any dialogue to define them into these roles, however they could be seen to fulfil these roles as the most seen character would be viewed as the hero and any antagonist in my video would be viewed as the villain. This theory applies to my work to a certain extent however I won't use it as a framework to base my narrative off.
The theory that I most considered applying to my work and my process was Todorov's who stated that every narrative begins with a state of "equilibrium" where the protagonist is happy, then the disruption happens where the protagonist has to fight to return to equilibrium. This is a theory which is applied to many films and story lines and even some music videos. I have chosen however to not include this set narrative type as the song I have chosen is so happy that there is no point where a disruption would fit. In a way, my video is set in an equilibrium but has no disruption.
